Complete Guide about Mag Drill

Mag drills are known as the name is Magnetic drill, by the name itself it is understood that it is a drilling machine used to make holes in metals. Mainly four components are there in the mag drill equipment i.e. magnetic base, motor, drill stand and an arbour.

Mag drills can be easily customized into using various tools like twist drills, reamers, annular cutters and many more. A magnetic drill press is mandatory for hard to access locations i.e. truck beds, vertical metals, I-beams etc. just like benchtop drill and standing drill press. The drill’s magnetic base sticks fast to metal surfaces and prevents it from loosening the grip while cutting the material. Don’t even think of experimenting this with the non-magnetic drill press, you won’t receive the same results.

Because of its distinguishing and numerable features, magnetic drill presses are highly recommended for construction site work. This makes the work more accurate and consistent with its speed and precision. The strong electromagnetic base is present in order to get adhered to a ferrous metal surface while the machine is on. The drill’s position changing feature is what makes it most highly suitable. It can be used horizontally, vertically and if required overhead also. Just be sure before turning on the machine to securely positioned the mag drill into the surface, to prevent any unwanted accident and damage.

Let’s go a little back in time to the point where the magnetic drills were first devised to penetrate large holes in structural steels. Mainly it was used by only construction companies. Due to its increased stability on the surface and handy, it was more popular than handheld drills. It used to cut large diameter holes faster as compared to other drills present at the time. Up to 40mm holes can be drilled and taped by it.

Now along with construction, fabrication and heavy engineering industry also take advantage of the machine. Apart from the core drilling, other operations it performs are twist drilling, countersinking, tapping i.e. thread cutting and reaming.

After the origination let’s look at the type of magnetic drill presses. There are three types of mag drills based on the work, work environment and necessities.

  • Electric Mag drill press – Most suitable and acceptable for the job site. Electricity must be available and the environment must be dry for it to operate.
  • Hydraulic Mag drill press – Highly recommended for the industrial, marine and construction work sites.
  • Pneumatic Mag drill press – The place must be suitable for accessing compressors and can work in a wet environment. These drills are mainly used in hazardous environments like where there is a threat of fire.

One of the plus points of Mag drill over conventional drill is that it’s portable and flexible. Another point is that it is around 3 times faster than conventional drilling machines in operation performance. Only the periphery of the hole is penetrated and not the required whole surface.

You need to be extra cautious while using the Mag drill press. First thing is, for the electromagnet to work properly, you need the ferrous metal as the material base. Second is to make sure the steel is flat and clean to hold the magnet onto the surface. There must not be any debris present at the bottom of the drill at the time of application. The third is to secure the drill press by chain because if accidentally the power is off, the tool will lose the grip from the steel and drop straight downward.

Most commonly used cutting tool for magnetic drills is the annular cutters. Its structure is like an end mill having a hollow centre that penetrates holes in metals. Note that steel is required to be ¼” thick for the annular cutters to perform at its best. Therefore you need to give extra thought to choosing the right drilling machine for the required work. Traditional drills have long gone outdated. Now the Mag drills are widely used in every field.

By combining SUPERCUT annular cutters with a magnetic drill, you’ll have a powerful metal cutting machine.
